AL Department Considers Four Fire Chief Candidates

Birmingham Chief Charles Gordon will retire at the end of the year. Two candidates up for the position are from Alabama, and two are from Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

The four final candidates vying to be Birmingham’s next fire chief were announced Thursday afternoon.

Two of the candidates are from Alabama. The other two from Atlanta and Washington, D.C.

Brian Bonner is a firefighter and paramedic with the Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Brian Lee is the director of Health, Safety and Emergency Management at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Wilmond Meadows is the community and government affairs manager for the State of Georgia for AMR EMS.

Lori Stoney is currently battalion chief with the Homewood Fire and Rescue Service.

Mayor Randall Woodfin is interviewing all four candidates this week. The national search for a new fire chief started with collecting applications from March 3, 2019 to April 5, 2019. There were 56 individuals who applied.

Former Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Chief Charles Gordon retired in December 2018 after 30 years with the BFRS. Gordon joined the department in January 1989 and rose through the ranks until he was appointed chief by former Mayor William Bell in September 2014.

City officials did not say when the new chief will be chosen.
