Oct. 19, 2020
A member of the Minneapolis Fire Department since 1995, Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Tyner is the mayor's choice to replace John Fruetel, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Assistant Minneapolis Fire Chief Bryan Tyner is Mayor Jacob Frey's pick to lead the department.

Frey announced Monday that he has nominated Tyner to take over as chief, replacing John Fruetel, who announced his retirement earlier this year.

Tyner joined the department in 1995 and has held numerous roles since then, most recently serving as assistant chief of administration. If selected, Tyner would become the department's second Black fire chief.

Frey decided to nominate Tyner "after a competitive, national search" that began in August, according to a news release

"A son of the Northside, Bryan Tyner has made the safety and security of Minneapolis his life's work," Frey said in a statement. "Bryan has seen our city at its best and helped lead the department through some of Minneapolis' most challenging moments. He will know how to handle whatever comes across his desk."

Tyner's nomination must be approved by City Council, which is expected to take a final vote Dec. 4, after a series of public meetings.

Tyner said in a statement: "It would be my distinct honor to serve this community as its next Fire Chief," said Tyner said in a statement. "I intend to lead this organization into the future with integrity, honesty, and fairness."
