FDNY First Deputy Commissioner Laura Kavanagh will be leading the FDNY until Mayor Eric Adams announces the next commissioner.
Kavanagh will take over this week after Commissioner Daniel Nigro ends his 40-year career with the department.
She joined the fire department almost eight years ago as an external affairs officer and served as a top aide for former Mayor Bill de Blasio, according to the New York Post.
She was named First Deputy Commissioner in 2017 by Nigro and oversaw recruitment and fire prevention efforts.
Adams has narrowed the commissioner candidates down from 20 and is reviewing each one thoroughly, according to a spokesperson for the mayor.
