Barron Named 2024 Training Officer of the Year

July 25, 2024
Vector Solutions and the IAFC’s Volunteer and Combination Officer’s Section selected Flower Mound, TX, Division Chief Robert Barron to receive the award.

Division Chief Training Officer Robert Barron of the Flower Mound Texas Fire Department has been selected as the 2024 recipient of the Training Officer Award, sponsored by Vector Solutions and the Volunteer and Combination Officers Section (VCOS) of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC).

This prestigious award recognizes individuals who excel in delivering and executing their agency’s training programs, demonstrating exceptional innovation, commitment to best practices, and operational effectiveness.

Chief Barron oversees the Training Division for Flower Mound Fire, which includes 150 members covering fire, EMS, and special operations. He has implemented a multi-faceted approach to training, incorporating audio, video, LMS systems, acquired structures, and drone footage to create unique and challenging scenarios. His latest initiative, the Company Officer Size Up and Command training, uses a multimedia approach and live actors to simulate realistic situations. He is also collaborating with the department’s communications team to develop assets in Real Engine software.

From live fire exercises to advanced software applications, Chief Barron is pushing the boundaries of training. The department now utilizes virtual reality units and realistic fire scenarios with multimedia applications that prompt different outcomes based on officer decisions.

"Training and education are about more than learning knowledge, skills, and abilities,” Barron said. “Combined, education and training can inspire the citizenry to make the world a better place."

Chief Barron has ensured compliance with the Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) and other regulatory agencies, addressing deficiencies present upon his arrival. He meticulously tracks credentials and maximizes training opportunities for all members. His familiarity with Vector Solutions has been instrumental in optimizing the platform for learning and testing Vector for Texas Fire Chiefs Association (TFCA) Best Practice Compliance.

"Vector Solutions is honored to continue our partnership with the IAFC to recognize fire training officers who go above and beyond to provide their agencies with outstanding training,” said Jonathan Cherins, who is Vector Solutions’ Chief Executive Officer. “When our firefighters respond to emergencies, it's thanks to their training they are prepared for the challenges they face. This year we had more than 40 nominees for this outstanding honor and it's humbling to know so many are so incredibly committed to their craft and their crew's safety and performance."

Chief Barron will be honored at the IAFC Volunteer and Combination Officers Section Annual Meeting at Fire-Rescue International in Dallas on Aug. 15.
