The Rockville fire chief and five of his command staff suddenly resigned Wednesday night.
Fire Chief Rodney Schaefer told the mayor and council he will be leaving in 30 days after 44 years as a firefighter. He added that he couldn't have asked for a better staff.
Schaefer didn't give a reason for his decision which caught elected officials off guard.
Also resigning are two assistant chiefs, two captains and the department's secretary, Fox 9 reported.
That leaves the department with two captains.
Mayor Duane Willenbring said he was stunned by the announcement. "I had no idea."
