Former Phoenix Executive Assistant Fire Chief Scott Walker, 57, says he's excited to have been selected and is ready to lead.

"It is my intention to utilize my 30-plus years of fire service experience to reinforce the strengths of the Waco Fire Department, which there are many, and to build upon our opportunities, ensuring that we are prepared to meet not just today's needs and expectations, but those of tomorrow," Walker said after his wife, Barbara, pinned his badge on his uniform Monday.

Walker,  the 14th fire chief in the department's 150-year history, was selected from a pool of 60 candidates from across the country who applied, KCEN reported.

"As a servant leader, I am committed to ensuring that you have the tools, the training, the support, the opportunity to be engaged and are empowered to serve our community. Your success will be my success."
