Newberry, FL, Fire Chief Resigns after Off-Duty DUI Arrest

Feb. 27, 2025
Ocala police reportedly found Newberry Fire Chief Mike Vogel in a pickup truck used to transport organs to hospitals.

Newberry Fire Chief Mike Vogel has resigned following his arrest for driving under the influence charges.

Vogel was arrested outside an Ocala hospital after police received a call about a suspected intoxicated driver in a truck from an organ transportation company, according to TV20.

When he arrived at the hospital, he reportedly smelled of alcohol, had slurred speech and stumbled while walking. Officers found four empty and five full mini vodka bottles near his truck.

"Although time will prove my innocence, I have chosen to resign,” Vogel said in a statement.

Officers found Vogel, inside a pickup truck with “LifeQuest,” an organ and tissue storage company, printed on the side.

Vogel refused to take a field sobriety test and was charged with driving under the influence.

He pleaded not guilty and bonded out of jail on Sunday.
