A fire chief in Berks County has been arrested and suspended after police said he dropped his three-month-old daughter and fractured his skull.
Falls Township Fire Chief Brian Salt, 36, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and aggravated assault after police said he admitted to intentionally letting his child fall on March 11.
Township police said in a criminal complaint that they went to a Philadelphia children’s hospital on March 12 after getting a report of a infant with a skull fracture.
Once there they spoke with the attending physician who said that in addition to the fractured skull, the infant had blood in her eye and bruising on her right leg
Salt initially told authorities he had taken his daughter to his in-laws while his wife was at work and noticed a bump on her head but did not know how it got there.
The complaint said he confessed to police a week later, saying that he had “lost control” that day when his daughter wouldn’t stop crying and dropped her.
“In his own words, he just kind of lost control. Lost his cool. And in the process of actually picking her up from a swing, he took her out of the swing and then threw her to the ground,” Detective Dennis O’Connell said to 6ABC.
The Falls Township Fire Company released a statement on Facebook saying that Salt has been suspended indefinitely.
“We understand the impact this situation has on our community, and we are committed to ensuring transparency as we move forward,” the statement said. “The safety and well-being of our community remain our top priority, and we will continue to support our firefighters and their families through this challenging time.”
Salt was arrested and remains in custody, People reported. The child has been released from the hospital. Her current condition is not known.
