ROSE HILL, KAN. -- An aspiring volunteer firefighter died Friday night while responding to a house fire in his personal vehicle.

When Brandon Daley, 19, a member of Rose Hill Volunteer Fire Company, missed the first due engine, he decided not to wait for the next truck, said Lt. Tim Linot, of Butler County Fire District #3.

At the entrance to the gated community where the fire was located, Daley lost control of his pickup truck. He was ejected as it overturned several times.

He was rushed to Kansas Medical Center where he died a short time later of injuries sustained in the crash.

"He was a very active individual. He was very much into it," Linot said.

Daley, a former Explorer, was currently enrolled in Firefighter 1 class, and taking the EMT course at the local community college.

"He was a very good, active volunteer who showed a lot of energy. He was always willing to help others," said Linot, the instructor of the fire class.

Flags in the community have been lowered to half mast in honor of the fallen firefighter.

Personnel from neighboring departments have volunteered to help out, and have made plans to attend the funeral. Sedgwick County will be standing by on Tuesday during funeral services.

Visitation will be held Monday, May 14 from 6-8 p.m. at Watson Funeral Home in Wichita.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Rose Hill Methodist Church.

Departments intending to send personnel or equipment should call 316-776-0401.
