Birmingham, Ala. Captain Billy A. Gafford collapsed during the department's annual fitness check April 25.
The 23-year veteran was walking around the track of the University of Alabama-Birmingham at approximately 2:30 p.m. before collapsing and was treated by fire-paramedics on the scene. They attempted to revive Gafford, but he was pronounced dead a short time later at UAB Hospital, according to Capt. C.W. Mardis.
Gafford was a firefighter and paramedic and led city fire station 16. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
"He was very dedicated to his job, he loved the fire service," he said. "He worked hard and studied hard to be the best firefighter he could be."
"He will be missed by not only the fire department, but by the whole city of Birmingham."

Visitation for Captain Gafford will be held Saturday, April 28 at Westwood Baptist Church, 2349 Forestdale Boulevard, Birmingham, Ala. from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 29 at 3 p.m. at the church.
