A Washington, D.C., firefighter died Sunday, days after suffering a medical emergency at a training facility.
Alex Graham, 48, suffered a "critical medical emergency" Thursday at the department's training academy, an online statement by the D.C. firefighters association said. He was member of Engine Company 21.
"Our members responded and began EMS care immediately," the fire union stated. "The staff and physicians at George Washington University Hospital battled alongside Alex, doing all that they could to improve his condition.
Graham had been Firefighter of the Year in 2018.
"I, along with the Department’s command staff, the leadership from IAFF Local 36 and members of the DC Firefighter Burn Foundation are now with Technician Graham’s loved ones and relatives, and we will all share funeral arrangements as soon as we know more," D.C. Fire Chief Gregory Dean told WRC-TV.
