NC Fire Recruit Collapses, Dies During Fitness Assessment

A Greensboro fire recruit collapsed and died during a fitness assessment Wednesday.

Andrew Vaughn, 36 was on the last lap of run when he told others his leg was cramping up.

The McLeansville resident was taking part in the fitness exam and was slated to begin the academy with 32 others on Sept. 1, fire officials told WFMYNews2.com.

The assessment included sit-ups, push-ups, pull-ups and a mile-and-a-half run and was designed to see where recruits needed assistance with physical fitness.

“This is an absolutely tragic day for the fire service, Andrew’s family and his wife Stephanie,” Greensboro Fire Chief Jim Robinson said. “The Greensboro Fire Department is devastated by Andrew’s untimely death. Our hearts go out to everyone who knew and loved him."
