A Bernalillo County firefighter is among four who died when a county sheriff's helicopter crashed near Las Vegas, NM, Saturday afternoon.
Officials say three members of the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office and the Bernalillo County firefighter were returning from the East Mesa Fire in eastern New Mexico when the helicopter, Metro 2, crashed.
The crew were “headed back to Albuquerque after assisting fire crews with the East Mesa Fire," Sheriff's Office spokespersn Jayme Fuller told KQRE.
This was the third fire the helicopter had been summoned to during the week, officials said.
The National Transportation Safety Board and New Mexico State Police are investigating the cause of the deadly crash.
“At this time the investigation into this incident is in its preliminary stages,” Fuller in said.
