Photo Story: Renovations Hamper Texas Firefighters

Three departments battled the fire at the former bar in Forest Hill Monday morning.

Firefighters encountered multiple ceilings and exterior coverings as they tried to contain an early morning fire at a Forest Hill building on Dec. 29.

Forest Hill fire units arrived to find smoke showing from the one-story bar in 5300 block of Mansfield Highway around 5:30 a.m. The building has been vacant since the summer.

Firefighters started with an interior attack, but were forced to the exterior when they encountered high heat and were unable to access the fire.

"They were having trouble with multiple ceilings," said Fort Worth PIO Kyle Falkner. "They had at least three levels to pull down."

As they transitioned to an exterior attack, mutual aid was called in. Fort Worth sent three engines, a quint and a battalion chief while Kennendale dispatched an ambulance and engine.

Firefighters set up the aerial on Fort Worth Quint 24 and deployed multiple handlines around the structure.

"Crews had a hard time getting to the seat of the fire," Falkner said. "The outside also had multiple layers of sheathing. We needed a lot of personnel to get it open."

Crews remained on scene for several hours trying to contain the fire and eventually hit hot sports.
