January Hot Shots include Los Angeles County firefighters responding to a report of a commercial building fire.
DUARTE, CA, NOV. 16—Los Angeles County firefighters responded to a report of a commercial building fire. A tremendous plume of smoke was visible for miles around. Firefighters forced entry and found stacks of automobiles heavily involved with fire; the vehicles’ airbags exploded continually. The fire was extinguished within one hour. Here, a Los Angeles County firefighter from Engine 169 places the first hoseline in operation.

WEST FAIRVIEW, PA, NOV. 12—Firefighters from the East Pennsboro, PA, Fire Department were assisted by crews from three counties at a blaze at a multifamily duplex. The building was engulfed by a large volume of fire when the first firefighters made it to the incident. Units encountered tight streets and downed power lines upon arrival. High winds pushed the fire to two neighboring houses.

SANTA CLARITA, CA, OCT. 24—With fire on the hillside behind them back burning against the wind, two Los Angeles County engine companies defend three houses at the end of a cul-de-sac against the Tick Canyon fire. At this point, the fire already burned through most of the surrounding area. Above them, a DC-10 is being positioned for a drop.

JACKSONVILLE, FL, DEC. 3—Jacksonville, FL, Fire Rescue Department’s Marine 40 battles a shrimp boat fire in the middle of the night. High winds pushed the fire to another boat that was docked in front of the one that’s seen here. Difficulties arose from deep-seated fire in the hull of both boats. Firefighters’ access was limited because of a thin dock way, so the marine unit was brought in to provide penetrating power.
