SANTA BARBARA COUNTY, CA, OCT. 16—A Santa Barbara County firefighter pulls a hoseline from a Type 3 wildland engine while working to contain the flames of the 17,000-acre Alisal Fire, as it burns over the coastal Highway 101 north of Santa Barbara. Early on, strong winds prevented members from being able to conduct their most effective suppression work. That included only partial use of aircraft. Some wind gusts reached 70 mph. The fire approached the compound that was known as the Western White House during Ronald Reagan’s presidency, but the compound was spared from the flames.
