An explosion at an industrial shop in Roseville on Tuesday morning resulted in a hazardous materials release and forced traffic restrictions around the 12 Mile-Groesbeck Highway area, firefighters said.
No injuries were reported.
Roseville Fire Chief Keith Jacobs said “some type of explosion” took place about 10 a.m. at RCO Engineering on 12 Mile Road at Calahan Road. The blast sparked a second-alarm fire.
“We have evacuated the building and are now preparing for the possibility of any of the smoke being toxic, so we want to make sure everybody is safe down there,” Jacobs said.
The Roseville Fire Department texted out an emergency alert requesting residents south and east of the scene to shelter in place. They are advised to remain indoors, and close all windows and doors.
The chief said he couldn’t comment on reports that firefighters were told that cyanide was involved. Cyanide is poisonous and used for various industrial applications, including metal extraction and electroplating.
Plumes of black smoke could be seen coming from one of the buildings near the railroad tracks.
According to the National Weather Service, winds are gusting to 18 mph out of the northwest, which can carry the smoke to the east.
“The winds are strong, which is a good think because it can dissipate the smoke,” Jacobs said.
Fire officials said the cause of the blast is unknown and will be investigated once the scene is stablized.
As of 11 a.m., 12 Mile Road is closed between Groesbeck Highway and Calahan, with additional restrictions taking place at Calahan and Common roads.
RCO Engineering is a supplier to the automotive, aerospace, and defense industries, according to the company’s website. Its services include production plastic and metal parts, prototype and production seat molds, prototype and production injection molds, a full service aluminum foundry, as well as complete product design and engineering services.
Fire crews from Eastpointe and St. Clair Shores are assisting the Roseville Fire Department, which also intends to contact the Macomb County Hazmat Team.
