OKLAHOMA CITY --
Strong winds and warmer-than-normal temperatures have Oklahoma firefighters on high alert.
Most of the state faces a high fire danger, and all the Oklahoma City-area counties are under a burn ban. That includes Oklahoma, Canadian, Logan and Cleveland counties.
Fire crews in Oklahoma City said they are ready to battle blazes, a day after severl fires ignited in the metro area. Firefighters said when danger gets as high as it is on Friday, they battle grass fires in a task-force type of fashion.
- Crews will send two brush pumpers instead of one to all scenes.
- A batallion chief goes to the scene as well.
- Reserve brush pumpers are parked at stations across the city waiting for calls.
"We can put someone on them a lot quicker. Get them started, and that way we have more help on the scene a lot faster," said Oklahoma City Fire Department Batt. Chief Bobby Lax.
Firefighters urged Oklahomans not to throw cigarettes from moving vehicles.
Anybody who sees a drive toss a cigarette from a car window can call the Oklahoma Department of Transportation hotline at 1-888-5-LITTER. They will need a tag number, car description and the time and location of the incident.
