Vancouver - A water bomber owned by Edmonton-based Air Spray, with two people aboard, has crashed near Cranbrook.

An Electra, the same kind of plane that crashed.

Capt. Alex Schenk, of the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria, says both people died in the crash.

Witnesses reported that the plane, a four-engine air tanker, exploded when it hit the ground in a wooded area about eight kilometres south of the city.

The crash started a fire.

Rescuers are trying to reach the crash site, which is not accessible by road.

The tanker is a Lockheed Electra. Air Spray, a fire suppression company, flies a total of 35 aircraft, including four Electras.

There is no information available about where the two people aboard the plane are from.
