Broken hydrants hampered Summit Twp. firefighters as they battled a deadly mobile home fire Saturday.
The fire at the Cozy Manufactured Home Community was reported around 5 a.m. and crews encountered four hydrants that were disabled or broken, acting Lt. B.J. Warner told MLive.com.
Firefighters pulled the 66-year-old man from the home shortly after they arrived, but said his death was not tied to the water issues.
Additional fire departments were called in to shuttle water from a nearby business to the fire scene.
The maintenance supervisor said he was only aware of one inoperable hydrant, which was struck by a car earlier this year.
An immediate inspection of all hydrants in the community of 200 homes was ordered by the owner of the facility.
"We all live in matchboxes," resident Scott Hall told the newspaper. "It's a bad thing to say, but its true...When they go, they go quick."
A firefighter was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
