New Haven firefighters also were trapped in the basement during the three-alarm fire, but they were able to escape the structure on their own.

A firefighter was injured Sunday night battling a basement fire in New Haven that displaced four people in the house, fire officials said.

The fire at 55 Benton St was reported just before 7:30 p.m. and was quickly upgraded to three alarms, according to tweets from the fire department in New Haven.

Rick Fontana, director of emergency operations, said in a text that a firefighter and one resident of the home were transported to the hospital, but their injuries were not considered serious.

The fire was brought under control by 9:30 p.m., according to a tweet. There was heavy damage to the basement and the first floor.

Although one tweet from the fire department reported one or more firefighters trapped in the basement, Fontana said all firefighters were able to get out of the structure on their own.
