Two Workers Hospitalized Following Oil Tank Explosion

Firefighters used foam to extinguish a burning oil storage tank that exploded and caught fire near the Texas A&M University Galveston campus Tuesday.

Two people were taken to a hospital after an oil storage tank exploded near the Texas A&M University Galveston campus Tuesday, according to Galveston city spokeswoman Marissa Barnett.

Their injuries are not life threatening, she said. They were working around the tank at the time of the explosion, she said. A shelter-in-place order was issued for the campus while firefighters tackled the blaze with foam.

A caller reported an explosion and fire around 3:20 p.m. at the Pelican Island Storage Terminal, which stores crude oil, in the 3800 block of GTI Boulevard, just east of the campus. Barnett said the cause is under investigation. The fire has been extinguished.
