A fire broke out at an industrial building in Easthampton, and flames burned up the wooden truss roof structure, which crashed down on cars and equipment.

Firefighters from nine departments battled a five-alarm fire in an industrial building in Easthampton Friday afternoon, and while the building was destroyed and numerous cars were burned, no people were injured.

Easthampton Fire Chief David Mottor said a patrolling police officer noticed smoke rising from a vent stack on the roof of the 200-foot-long building at 69 Ferry St. The officer reported the blaze at about 12:35 p.m.

The first firefighters on the scene reported heavy flame and smoke near a spray booth in the Full Tilt Body and Collision shop, which was the major tenant in the building. Fire was also burning up into the wooden truss roof structure that spanned the concrete block walls of the building.

Mottor said five-alarms were eventually struck as the truss system collapsed into the interior of the building crashing down on cars and equipment.

Fire units from Southampton, Northampton, Holyoke, Hadley, Amherst, Westfield, West Springfield and Hatfield responded to Easthampton’s call for municipal aid.

Fire investigators from the Easthampton Police Department and the State Fire Marshal’s Office are determining the exact cause of the fire.
