WORCESTER, MA—Firefighters converged on the A&D Cold Storage warehouse at 512 Southbridge St. on Wednesday as thick brown smoke poured from the building.
Multiple alarms were struck, and firefighters pried open doors, releasing even more smoke. A forklift was used to rip siding off the building to give firefighters better access.
Ladder trucks lined up in the sprawling building's parking lot to pour water on the building. No flames were visible, but smoke wafted from the top corners of the roof.
Southbridge Street was shut down at Cambridge and Hammond streets. Fire trucks and emergency vehicles lined the entire length of the road.
Firefighters went to the building just after 4 p.m. Within about an hour, much of the smoke coming from the building had dissipated, but crews are expected to remain for hours.
According to the company's website, A&D Cold Storage provides "1.5 million cubic feet of racked and unracked storage areas. We have rooms that can be set for special temperature ranges. Freon central refrigeration system with temperature and Freon leak monitoring by American Alarm."Leicester and Millbury fire departments are providing mutual aid to cover Worcester stations while firefighters battle the blaze.
The Box 4 canteen truck is providing food and drinks to firefighters. It was 86 degrees at 4 p.m. at Worcester Regional Airport with 12 mph winds, and likely hotter downtown.
