Toronto FFs Battle Difficult, Wind-Driven 3-Alarm Fire

Toronto firefighters battled a three-alarm fire for nearly three hours Saturday as the flames damaged several townhouses under construction.

The fire broke out at shortly before 10 a.m. near the city's Downsview Park, the CBC reports. When crews reached the scene, heavy smoke and flames were coming from one of the townhouses.

Toronto Fire Chief Matthew Pegg called the incident a wind-driven fire, and strong gusts created a challenge for firefighters, who didn't enter the vacant townhouses because parts of the structures collapsed during the call, making it unsafe.

"We have dealt with numerous collapses over the course of the firefight so it is not safe for us to put people inside the building," he told the CBC.

Crews had the fire under control shortly before 1 p.m. No injuries were reported.
