Firefighters worked quickly after a fire at an apartment complex in Virginia Beach spread to the roof and severely damaged multiple units.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - Fire spread to multiple units in the Indian Lakes Apartments in Virginia Beach Sunday night, according to the fire department.

Just after 4:30 p.m. the fire department responded to the fire on the 1700 block of Yellow Knife Trail in the Acredale area of the city.

There was heavy fire on the first and second floors and 24 apartments were damaged. Ten of the apartments had severe damage and 14 had moderate smoke and water damage. Sixteen of the apartments are uninhabitable. It’s unclear how many people were displaced.

A 19-year-old was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation after he went door-to-door to notify people of the fire, a fire department spokesperson said.

The fire was caused by improperly discarded ashes, the fire department said. It was deemed an accident.
