Man Accused of Pulling Hose from MA Firefighters at Car Fire

A 40-year-old Worcester man has been accused of setting a car on fire and then pulling a hose from firefighters who responded to the scene, trying to prevent them from putting out the flames, police said.

Worcester firefighters and police officers were dispatched to 2 Shawmut St. around 9:30 p.m. Monday for a car fire. The car was parked in a driveway with significant front-end damage, police said in a statement. Firefighters had already put out the flames by the time officers got to the scene.

Officers gathered information on a suspect, identified as Alberto Torres-Pinales, the statement said.

Torres-Pinales tried to stop firefighters from extinguishing the flames, police said, pulling a hose from them and yelling.

The suspect got into a white Cherokee Jeep and moved the Jeep behind the fire hose. Though he was told not to leave the scene, he drove over the fire hose and “took off recklessly” down Shawmut Street, police said.

Torres-Pinales was seen driving on Merrick Street and officers eventually located him at his apartment on Jefferson Street, police said. He is charged with burning a motor vehicle, interfering with a firefighter and driving over a fire hose without the consent of the fire department.
