An FDNY EMS worker was seriously injured and five firefighters suffered minor injuries during a five-alarm fire at a Staten Island warehouse Wednesday.
The fire broke out at around 2:30 p.m. at a warehouse in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood, and it quickly escalated to a five-alarm call, Acting Chief of Department Thomas Richardson said in a statement. Around 200 firefighters and EMS personnel responded to the fire.
Flames engulfed the warehouse, and plumes of smoke could be seen for several miles. Workers were still in the building at the time of the fire, but they were able to safely escape, Richardson stated.
During the call, an EMS member was severely injured, but no details were released concerning the nature or extent of the injury, WPIX-TV reports. Five firefighters also suffered minor injuries, but it was unclear how they were hurt.
The fire was brought under control by about 5 p.m., WCBS-TV reports.
