SYRACUSE, NY—The roof of a building on Syracuse’s North Side building collapsed Thursday morning after the building caught fire, according to fire officials.
No one was injured, but more than 50 firefighters had to be called to the scene, said Deputy Chief John Kane.
Firefighters responded to the 1000 Butternut Street for a reported fire, Kane said.
The building has a convenience store on the first floor and apartments above it.
Initially it was reported that people were trapped in the upstairs apartments, but it was later determined that one person lived in one of the apartments and had gotten out of the building, Kane said.
People who live in a neighboring building were evacuated from their apartments as firefighters fought the fire, according to Kane.
Crews had to fight the fire from outside the building because conditions inside the apartment became dangerous, and it took four hours for the fire to be extinguished, Kane said.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
