Ammunition rounds continued to go off during an explosion-ignited fire that burned a Noxon firefighter, who needed to be airlifted to the hospital.

A Montana firefighter was seriously burned during a fire caused by explosions Monday.

The incident happened just after 7 a.m. on a stretch of property in Noxon, the Clark Fork Valley Press reports. Neighbors of the property called 9-1-1 following two explosions that shook nearby houses.

"It was flames hundreds of feet high, and a huge mushroom cloud," said a neighbor to the property.

Once firefighters from multiple departments reached the scene, they found ammunition rounds going off in the fire on the property. Crews held back and continued to douse the blaze from a distance.

One firefighter suffered burns battling the fire. The first responder was airlifted to the hospital, and no details were released about the extent of the injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the explosions has not been determined. The state fire marshal is investigating the incident.
