MA Crews Reach Fire Before 9-1-1 Calls after Spotting Smoke

Flames caused significant damage to a Westfield home, but the fire's aftermath could have been worse if firefighters hadn't seen smoke while returning to the station.

WESTFIELD, MAA Parker Avenue home sustained heavy fire damage to the exterior and some smoke damage in a Monday afternoon fire that was knocked down quickly by firefighters who spotted the smoke as they were returning to the station from another call.

Deputy Chief Benjamin Warren said the damage to the home at 8 Parker Avenue was significant, but it would likely have been worse had the engine company not responded to the scene as quickly as they did.

They were on scene and beginning to attack the fire as the first 9-1-1 calls were being made by neighbors, Warren said.

“They quickly knocked down the fire because they were right there,” he said.

No one was injured and everyone had left the house before firefighters arrived, he said.

The house sustained fire damage to the exterior and the porch, but flames were stopped before they could spread inside, Warren said.

Four residents were displaced. The home is not considered habitable until repairs are made.

The fire remains under investigation, but it appears to be accidental, Warren said.
