MANLIUS, NY—The cause of an early morning fire at a Manlius apartment complex Wednesday has been ruled accidental in nature by the Onondaga County Fire Investigation Unit.
Emergency crews were alerted to the fire just after 5 a.m. at the Town House East Apartments, Manlius police spokesman Sgt. Ken Hatter said in a news release.
Investigators confirmed the fire began on the second floor of an apartment, Hatter said.
All people and known pets were evacuated without reported injuries, but two emergency responders suffered minor injuries, Hatter said. One was treated on scene, and another was taken to an area hospital for further evaluation, he said.
The fire began in the second-floor bedroom of an apartment, but quickly spread to neighboring apartments and subsequently to adjoining apartment buildings, Hatter said.
Five apartment buildings were damaged by the fire, Hatter said. 24 individual apartments were ruled uninhabitable due to a combination of fire damage, smoke damage, water damage or loss of power, he said.
The American Red Cross also responded to the scene and helped take those who were displaced by the fire to a temporary shelter at Fayetteville-Manlius High School, Hatter said.
Fayetteville- Manlius school counselors were also working with students and their families who were affected by the incident, Hatter said.
Police ask anyone with information about the apartment fire to call the Manlius Police Department at 315-682-2212.
