Dallas Firefighter Hurt Rescuing Resident from Fire

A Dallas firefighter suffered multiple injuries in a fall from a ladder while rescuing a burned resident from a balcony at a burning apartment complex.

Four people, including a Dallas firefighter, were injured Tuesday morning when a fire broke out at a White Rock apartment complex.

Firefighters were called to the Legends on Lake Highlands Apartment Homes in the 11000 block of Lake Highlands Drive about 9 a.m. Tuesday. The complex is just south of Northwest Highway.

Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman Jason Evans said one firefighter was taken to a hospital for a lower-body injury after falling from a ladder while rescuing a resident. The firefighter is expected to be OK, Evans said.

Two residents also were taken to hospitals with burn injuries, while a third resident was treated by first responders but chose not to go to a hospital, Evans said.

The fire started in the kitchen of a first-floor apartment but spread to the upper floors of the two-story building, according to Evans. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze and damage was limited to four units of the 16-unit building, he said.

Apartment management has set up accommodations in vacant apartments for the displaced residents, Evans said.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined, he said. No information was immediately available.
