Firefighters in Boston had to evacuate a multi-level structure when changing smoke and fire conditions forced them out.

A two-alarm fire in a Boston building under construction quickly turned into a defensive operation Friday evening.

Boston firefighters were dispatched to a report of smoke from a building on the 1600 block of Washington Street in the Dorchester neighborhood.

First companies to arrive reported heavy smoke conditions and initially took aggressive actions to control the fire. As conditions changed, command pulled personnel back to a defensive posture, according to tweets from the Boston Fire Department.

Multiple hoselines were run, and crews used saws to ventilate the structure allowing firefighters to gain better access to the fire.

The fire was brought under control after significant damage occurred to the structure.
