The Milwaukee fire chief extended an apology to the family of a woman whose body was found in a burned-out vehicle after it was towed to a city lot.

Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski apologized to the family of a deceased woman Tuesday after her body was found in a burned-out vehicle after it was removed from a fire scene Sunday.

A fire involving the vehicle and a building on the 6800 block of North 76th Street  was contained before a tow truck moved the vehicle to a city tow lot.

That is where an attendant found the body of a 21-year-old woman in the vehicle, according to Fox6Now.

"I want it to ring very clear that a search of a recently extinguished vehicle is our responsibility, and we failed to uphold that standard in this situation," Lipski said in a press conference.

"On behalf of the Milwaukee Fire Department, I am so very sorry for the additional pain this has caused the family, beyond already dealing with this horribly tragic situation," the chief added.
