Photos: New Orleans FFs Tackle Simultaneous Multi-Alarm Fires
Firefighters in New Orleans battled two multiple alarm fires within an hour of each other Wednesday morning.
Firefighters were called to a house fire on the 3200 block of Toledano Street around 3:30 a.m. Investigators believe the two-alarm fire started at an adjacent abandoned structure and spread to the house that area residents said was frequented by vagrants.
Five people were displaced by the fire, WDSU 6 New reported.
The three-alarm fire started around 4:30 a.m. at an Algiers storage facility on the 3200 block of General DeGaulle Drive.
The fire spread through insulation and common attic space to several units, according to a fire department statement.
It quickly escalated to three alarms when on-scene crews needed additional manpower to access the individual storage units to extinguish the fire, according to the television station.
Fire officials said the stubborn blaze was under control in close to four hours.
Sixteen fire units responded to the first fire and 21 units were needed to control the second fire.
