Firefighters near Alvarado battling a massive pallet fire had to seek shelter as a tornado passed overhead.

Crews from the Alvarado Fire Department were battling a massive pallet fire when they had to seek cover as a tornado passed overhead.

Firefighters were called to battle the fire as storms moved through the area. Officials believe the fire was possibly started by a lightning strike.

As crews were battling the flames, they had to seek refuge in an SUV as a tornado passed over. Alvarado Fire Department Captain Brad Hargrove told CBS 11 News, “We looked up and it was coming right over the top of us.”

Firefighters are expected to be on scene for several days as they allow the fire to burn itself out and to prevent it from spreading to nearby properties.
