Auburn, N.Y. — Five people were rescued from a burning building in Auburn and three people were taken to the hospital Friday night, fire officials said.
Around 11:05 p.m., firefighters responded to a reported fire at a multi-family home, at 42 South St., according to a news release from the Auburn Fire Department.
When crews arrived, they saw flames coming from two floors of the building, they said. Firefighters knocked out the flames visible from the exterior as other crews began search efforts inside, fire officials said.
A firefighter, who had never worked a fire before, found the first victim on the second floor, fire officials said. With the help of a Lieutenant, the new firefighter brought the victim out of the home where she received medical treatment on scene, they said.
The searches for trapped residents continued as more fire departments arrived to help suppress the fire, they said.
The search efforts were aided by a victim who was on the phone with the Cayuga County 911 Center, fire officials said.
In total five people were rescued from the building, fire officials said. Several residents were treated for injuries at the scene, they said.
Additional ambulances were requested due to the number of injured patients, fire officials said. Three people were taken to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment, they said.
The status of the three patients who were transported to the hospital is unknown at this time, fire officials said.
The building sustained significant damage and the building is condemned at this time, they said. The American Red Cross assisted multiple residents to find shelter for the night, they said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, fire officials said.
