NY Firefighter Bails Out Window at House Fire

Sept. 1, 2022
Another Syracuse firefighter went missing briefly but is OK.

Syracuse firefighters encountered challenging conditions as they battled the flames in a house Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were working in zero visibility as they searched and made their way to the room where the fire was located, fire officials said in a written statement.

"A handline team was impinged by this rapid increase in heat, and a firefighter bailed out of a window," the statement read.

Chief officers called a ‘Mayday’ on behalf of the second member of this handline team as it was not immediately apparent where he was. However, it was soon discovered he had left by a different door.

Two firefighters were sent to the hospital. One was treated for burns and released, while the other suffered a heat-related illness and was admitted for observation.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and checked for extension to the rest of the house. The fire was contained to the first floor.

There were no smoke detectors in the house.

The cause of the fire that started in a bedroom is under investigation.

"Fire scenes are extremely dynamic and can change in seconds..." fire officials said.
