SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Firefighters controlled two fires early this morning.
At 4:44 a.m., firefighters were alerted by the 9-1-1 Center to a possible fire in the 100 block of Stewart Court, in the Pioneer Homes neighborhood.
Firefighters from Station 1 (S. State St.) arrived to find a 2-story, brick, multioccupancy building with smoke coming from the windows.
Crews forced through the locked front door and were met by floor-to-ceiling heavy smoke.
They stretched an attack handline into the apartment and extinguished a kitchen fire.
Other firefighters searched the two-floor apartment for occupants.
One occupant, alerted by a smoke detector, had evacuated the apartment.
They were evaluated for smoke inhalation by AMR.
There were no other injuries. The occupant is displaced from the apartment.
Syracuse fire investigators determined this fire was caused by on oven accidentally left on by the occupant.
The fire was successfully contained to the kitchen by firefighters. Crews remained on scene clearing smoke and toxic gases from the structure.
At 6:47 a.m., shortly after units cleared Stewart Court, firefighters were alerted by the 9-1-1 Center to another possible fire in the 300 block of Malverne Drive, on the Northside.
Firefighters from Station 2 (Lodi St.) arrived to find a 2½-story, wood-framed house with fire coming out of first-floor windows.
Crews quickly began searching for occupants, as well as stretching attack handlines into the house, where they began fire suppression.
Firefighters successfully contained the fire to a bedroom on the first floor.
Two occupants of the house safely self-evacuated, despite there being no functioning smoke detectors.
Before leaving the fire scene, firefighters installed new detectors in the house.
There were no injuries. Syracuse Fire Investigators determined this fire was caused accidentally by a candle.
