All four firefighters transported to the hospital for injuries were released, Chief Michael Monds said late Thursday morning.
Syracuse, N.Y. — A firefighter was treated for burns Wednesday night after a vacant apartment building caught fire in Syracuse.
Firefighters were called around 11:34 p.m. to the Peace Manor apartments, 153 Seymour St., for the fire, Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds said.
The third floor was on fire when firefighters arrived, Monds said. The flames quickly moved up to the fourth floor, he said.
The building has 40 apartments, according to property records.
As firefighters were stretching hoses up the building, they came across a man inside who appeared disoriented, Monds said.
He was escorted outside and told crews that another person was still inside, Monds said. Multiple searches of the building were done after the fire was extinguished but there was no sign of the person, he said.
The man was evaluated at the scene but was not taken to a hospital, Monds said.
About 48 firefighters responded to the building and it took them about 40 minutes to extinguish the fire and take out any hot spots, Monds said.
“It was a huge response, but it was needed,” Monds said. “These firefighters had a huge task.”
A firefighter a part of the first group to arrive to the fire sustained burns, Monds said. The firefighter was taken to a hospital and was evaluated, he said.
Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire, Monds said.
