Smoke from a large fire filled a Boston neighborhood Sunday after a three-story house was consumed by flames, leaving 25 residents displaced and five people injured, including two firefighters, fire officials said.
The 2-alarm fire started at around 7:10 a.m. on the back porches of 571 Cummins Highway, the Boston Fire Department tweeted, as “thick black smoke filled the neighborhood.
At around 7:30 p.m., the fire was knocked down but the building’s back porches had collapsed, a subsequent tweet read.
“An aggressive interior and exterior attack helped to prevent the fire from spreading to the surrounding buildings,” officials shared on Twitter, including photos.
Boston Deputy Fire Chief Brian Tully said three residents and two firefighters were injured. All were taken by Boston EMS officials and had minor injuries.
Tully added that 25 residents were displaced and would receive help from Red Cross Massachusetts to house them.
“It is a good thing that everybody got out because if this was like in the dead of night it could have been a lot worse,” said Tully according to Boston 25 News.
By around 8:37 p.m., fire crews were still in the area to monitor for any hot spots, Boston fire officials said. The department said its Fire Investigation Unit was looking into what might have caused the fire.
