St. Paul firefighters said this is the first fire fatality of 2023.

A person died after a fire at a St. Paul home, the first fire fatality of the year in the city, the fire department said Wednesday.

Fire crews responded to a report of a structure fire in the 1000 block of North Western Avenue in the North End at 12:37 p.m. Tuesday. Someone walking by saw smoke coming from a window of a home and called 911.

Firefighters quickly found a person inside the home. They brought the person outside and started resuscitation efforts in the front yard. Paramedics brought the victim to a hospital and the patient was later pronounced dead, the fire department said.

Two pets died in the home and one escaped when firefighters forced entry inside.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, though they were on the scene for more than three hours.

The fire is under investigation.
