Fire Destroys Vacant PA High School

Dec. 11, 2023
Harrisburg firefighters encountered heavy fire at the former William Penn High School on Monday.

A fire broke out Monday morning at Harrisburg’s vacant William Penn High School, officials said.

Firefighters were dispatched at 6:10 a.m. for a first-alarm fire at the school on the 2900 block of North Fourth Street, according to the Harrisburg Bureau of Fire.

Officials said heavy flames were showing from the building when firefighters arrived.

Additional details, including what caused the fire and if anyone was hurt, were not immediately available.

The fate of William Penn High School has long been under debate.

In September, the Harrisburg School District announced a task force would be created to decide what to do with the building. Administrators previously approved a plan to tear down the building, to an outcry from some community members.
