FREDERICK, MD -- A three-alarm fire Saturday afternoon destroyed a historic building in downtown Frederick.

Firefighters could see the heavy smoke billowing into the area when they left their stations.

Officers immediately called for a second alarm, and eventually, a third.

The resident in a second-floor apartment, who was one of the 9-1-1-callers, escaped without injury, Frederick County Chief Tom Coe said.

The building of origin is connected to another via an enclosed walkway.

"The smoke traveled through the walkway but no fire," the chief said.

Until about a month ago, there was an antique mall operating on the first floor. He said it closed as the owners was going to have electrical work done. t

"There were antiques being stored in the building," Coe said.

The fire remains under investigation by the fire marshal's office.

Two firefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
