An off-duty lieutenant with the Rochester Hills Fire Department rescued two people from a house fire Wednesday morning after spotting smoke from the residence while driving by, officials said.
The two are hospitalized in serious condition, officials said.
Lt. Chris Ogg was driving by the home in the 700 block of John R Road when he noticed smoke coming from it, stopped his vehicle, found an extension ladder in the yard and used it to rescue two adults through a second-story window, according to a news release from the fire department.
Firefighters were dispatched to the scene shortly before 9 a.m., arrived shortly afterward and extinguished the blaze. They also rescued one dog from the house which was transported by Oakland County Animal Control to a nearby animal hospital for treatment, the news release states.
Mutual aid was provided by Rochester, Auburn Hills, and Shelby Township.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Fire Investigation Unit.
“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to Lt. Ogg for his extraordinary bravery and swift action in rescuing these residents from their home. His courage saved lives,” Rochester Hills Mayor Bryan Barnett stated in the news release. “And while the two victims remain in serious condition, we will continue to pray for them and their families.”
