Dallas School Catches Fire for Fifth Time in Three Months

Dec. 4, 2024
The abandoned school is in the process of being razed, Dallas officials say.

An abandoned school in east Oak Cliff went up in flames for the fifth time in three months Tuesday evening and the cause of the three-alarm fire is under investigation, according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.

A passerby saw the fire at 3313 S. Beckley Avenue and reported it to authorities, according to a news release. Firefighters then responded to the 911 call about the blaze at just after 7 p.m.

Up to 70 firefighters were called to battle the blaze as it grew, an official says. No injuries have been reported.

Blazes have previously been reported at the abandoned school on Sept. 26, Oct. 13, Nov. 11 and Dec. 2, leaving structural damages, the news release says. As a result, the current response is “defensive in nature,” according to Dallas Fire-Rescue.

The abandoned school is also in the process of being demolished, Dallas ISD spokeswoman Robyn Harris has previously said.

The building previously housed specialized schools such as the Maya Angelou High School for new or expectant student mothers as well as the Barbara Mann Disciplinary Alternative Education Program.
