Photos: Rochester, NY, Home Collapses, Burns Following Explosion
One person escaped after a Rochester home exploded Friday, collapsing the structure with flames spreading to the exposures.
Firefighters were called to Pullman Avenue around 1:30 p.m. and crews found flames engufling one home.
Following the explosion, the home "pancacked," Rochester Fire. Lt. Jackie Sierra told the Democrat & Chronicle. The home was leveled.
Firefighters found heavy fire and quickly called a second alarm with reports of people trapped in multiple structures.
With firefighting efforts under way and crews trying to protect the adjacent homes while they searched them, a third alarm was sounded.
Sierra said one person self-evacuated from the collapsed home and sustained burns. He was taken to the hospital for treatment.
"It was crazy," neighbor Mariah Calkins told WHAM. "I ran outside. I started screaming for the guy that lives here, because I've lived here for 10 years. I know all of my neighbors. I was just hoping I'd hear his voice or something."
The response brought over 50 firefighters from 13 fire companies.
