Photos: RV into House, Two Fires Keep Fort Worth,TX, Firefighters Busy

Fort Worth firefighters battled a stubborn house fire, a vacant warehouse fire and rescued the driver of an RV who crashed into a home on Friday's shift.

Fort Worth firefighters had a busy shift Friday following a winter storm that blanketed the region with snow and ice.

Around 11 a.m., firefighters were called for a fire in the garage of a home in the Colonial Hills neighborhood.

Engine 21 found fire showing from the front of the one-story home and began attacking the fire in the garage, which housed two vehicles.

As they searched the home, crews found fire had spread to the attic, creating challenging conditions for firefighters as they pulled ceilings to access the fire overhead.

Flames eventually engulfed the attic, forcing firefighters to withdraw from the house and use a defensive attack.

The aerial from Quint 21 was set up, along with multiple hose lines used on all sides of the house to knock down the fire and protect the adjacent homes.

No injuries were reported, fire department spokesman Craig Trojacek told Firehouse.com.

About 50 firefighters and chiefs responded to the scene.

With crews still operating at the house fire, Engine 26 was dispatched to a reported recreational vehicle (RV) on fire in West Wedgewood. They arrived to find an RV into the home with the RV on fire and asked that a full structure assignment was dispatched.

As they assessed the situation, the found that the vehicle was still accelerating despite striking the structure.

While firefighters used extrication tools to open the driver's side of the RV, other firefighters used a saw to gain access on the passenger side. A hoseline was deployed to cool the vehicle as it was getting superheated while the engine revved.

The crews were able get to the gas pedal and stopped the vehicle from accelerating while others worked to extricate the driver who was pinned inside.

The driver was in serious condition, Trojacek said, adding that Medstar transported him to a local hospital for treatment.

He called the cause of the crash accidental.

Firefighters remained on scene to help a heavy-duty wrecker remove the RV from the home.

“In the fire service you have two kinds of shifts, shifts where you have time to train and prepare and shifts when you put that training to hard work. We’ve been doing some work here in Fort Worth the last couple of days," Trojacek said.

About 5 a.m. Saturday, firefighters were dispatched to a reported building fire on North Main Street between downtown and the Fort Worth stockyards.

Firefighters from Station 1 found heavy fire throughout a two-story vacant warehouse on the same block as a two-alarm fire in another warehouse that occurred two weeks ago.

They set up for a defensive attack as fire shot from the windows and through the roof of the building.

Tower 1's platform was placed into service, along with ladder pipes on Truck 2 and Quint 12 as supply lines were laid.

As firefighters battled the flames, winds continued to fan the flames throughout the building as they worked, protecting adjacent buildings.

The fire was placed under control nearly two hours after firefighters arrived and crews remained on scene for nearly 12 hours to hit hotspots.

“We all took an oath. That oath was to be the best we can be for the residents that we serve every single time we leave the firehouse no matter the cost," Trojacek told Firehouse.com. "That’s what they expect from us and we’re honored to do it”
