Firefighters Rescue Four from Birmingham, AL, Apartment Fire

Birmingham firefighters were told one person was still inside the building and rescue a total of four people.

Four people were taken to the hospital, at least one with serious injuries, after fire swept through a small apartment building in Birmingham’s Southside Friday night.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service crews were dispatched about 6:30 p.m. to the four-unit building in the 1100 block of Cullom Street.

Battalion Chief Clay Hendon said firefighters arrived to find heavy fire showing on the second story, with flames coming through the apartment windows.

Crews were told there was a person trapped and immediately went into rescue mode. Moments later there were additional reports of more people trapped, Hendon said.

Ultimately, firefighter pulled four people from the fire.

Two people were taken by rescue unit to UAB Hospital. Two others were treated on the scene and released but later requested to also be taken to the hospital.

Hendon said all four units were damaged, displacing four families. The Red Cross will be contacted to help the families.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. As of 8 p.m., firefighters remained on the scene performing overhaul operations of the building.
